Roqué Stahl Ltd. is an independent publishing label founded by Javier A. Román-Nieves in 2016, with the release of his first crowdfunded publication, Sounds of Watching. Its mission has been to create and publish works that gather and share knowledge with as many people as possible, and in the most artful way at hand. Since then, our website has grown to include new releases made under the label, as well as collaborative and academic work. Studio and freelance projects will also be featured. The name of the label is intended to honor the legacy of Ana Roqué de Duprey and Agustín Stahl who, like Javier’s family, spent a significant amount of their lives in the coastal town of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Besides being scientists and naturalists, they exemplified the same combination of artistry, science and DIY spirit that our publications aspire to.

Roqué Stahl Ltd. es un sello editorial independiente fundado por Javier A. Román Nieves en 2016, con el lanzamiento de su primera publicación financiada colectivamente, Sonidos del Avistamiento. Su misión ha sido crear y publicar trabajos que recojan y compartan conocimiento con el mayor número de personas posible y de la manera más artística disponible. Desde entonces, nuestro sitio web ha crecido para incluir nuevos lanzamientos bajo el sello, así como trabajo colaborativo y académico. Proyectos de estudio y consultoría también serán incluidos. El nombre del sello intenta honrar el legado de Ana Roqué de Duprey y Agustín Stahl quienes, al igual que la familia de Javier, pasaron una parte significativa de sus vidas en el pueblo costero de Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Además de ser científicos y naturalistas, ambas figuras ejemplificaron la misma combinación de arte, ciencia y espíritu DIY al que aspiran nuestras publicaciones.

Javier A. Román-Nieves is an artist, writer and natural resource manager. He obtained a first master’s degree in architecture from the University of Puerto Rico in 2004, and a second one from the Yale School of the Environment in 2019. His artwork is featured in private and institutional collections in Puerto Rico, and his essays and op-eds are now being published in both English and Spanish. Currently based in New Haven, Connecticut, Javier combines skills from human ecology, ecosystem conservation and GIS mapping, into a unique practice between land management and environmental communications. He still likes to photograph birds and stars.
Javier A. Román-Nieves es un artista, escritor y manejador de recursos naturales. Obtuvo una primera maestría en arquitectura de Universidad de Puerto Rico, en 2004, y una segunda maestría de la Yale School of the Environment, en 2019. Su arte figura en colecciones privadas e institucionales en Puerto Rico, y sus ensayos y columnas de opinión son ahora publicadas en español e inglés. Basado actualmente en New Haven, Connecticut, Javier combina destrezas de ecología humana, conservación de ecosistemas y cartografía GIS, en una práctica única entre el manejo de terrenos y la comunicación ambiental. Todavía le gusta fotografiar aves y estrellas.
